Joel Christopher’s “The Master Apprentice”

Posted by Simon Leung in Gurus, Updates on April 28th, 2006 | No Comments

About 24 hours ago, I was on the phone with Joel Christopher, the Master List Builder himself!

Just minutes before, I had applied for his “Master Apprentice” program. I heard about it through one of his Teleseminars, which is available to his Birthday Blowout customers. On the phone, he told me that he usually simply sends a courtesy email to his applicants to thank them for their application, but after reviewing mine, he decided to call me right away – even though it was already midnight in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas!

Although my Birthday Blowout package has not arrived yet, I knew that I wanted to be a part of something much bigger than just an audio course; I wanted to work with Joel on a one-on-one basis.

With The Master Apprentice, I will have that opportunity!

You see, this is not just any old mentoring program. All of Joel’s apprentices will have the opportunity to work with the Master List Builder and eventually take over one of his businesses after Joel retires! With this much at stake, OF COURSE Joel will do everything in his power to help you succeed!

It’s an amazing program, and I was very excited when I received a phone call from Joel earlier this afternoon to inform me that I had been accepted into the “Apprenticeship Pre-Qualification” Gold Club program. This means that I will be able to work with Joel and his team for a trial period of 6 months, and if all goes well, I will become an official business partner!

As soon as I got off the phone with Joel, I began the fun tasks of booking flights and making hotel reservations for the Interactive MasterListBuilder Fun Shop, which takes place from May 4th through May 8th in San Antonio, Texas. I’ve never been to Texas before, so this will definitely be a great experience!

I’m so stoked about meeting Joel in person. Despite his tremendous success, he is the most down-to-earth guy you will ever meet. In my 90 minute conversation with him, Joel provided me with new insight in the business, as well as both personal and professional advice. He’s even reading my blog! =)

Joel is an amazing mentor. We hit it off right away, and I know we will become great partners and friends.

To say the least, the last 24 hours has been quite interesting. In my first post, I titled it “Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Life.” Well now, 2 years later, I think my day has finally come, because today is officially the day the blueprints to my Internet Marketing success is finally born.

SES Optimization Sessions

Posted by Simon Leung in Google, Travel, Updates on April 26th, 2006 | No Comments

Hello from the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto!

It has been an exhausting, but very productive tradeshow thus far. During the past 2 days, I’ve been speaking non-stop to AdWords advertisers to discuss recommendations to improve the performances and conversions of their campaigns.

Advertisers of all ranges of skill level have signed up for these 1-on-1 sessions, from total newbies to marketing experts of 30+ years. For the most part, I’m confident that everyone walked away with something constructive. Everyone was definitely satisfied with these sessions. Many said that they signed up for the conference not so much for the seminars, but for the chance to speak live with an AdWords Optimization Specialist. A couple went as far as to say that the session (and one said that one TIP) was worth the price of the entire convention alone!

It is also very cool to speak with other agencies. Some agencies actually signed up for these sessions themselves! They specialize in AdWords account management, so what better way to get good information than to come straight to the source, right?

The Google Yo-Yo giveaways are a big hit. Other booth members as well as the staff of the convention center are playing with it right in front of me as I am typing this! We also have Google cell-phone boosters, which reduce radiation and improve reception. These are very popular as well.

Oh, and the party last night was pretty fun. Very low key, and mostly networking took place. I met a few Googlers from our small Toronto office. There is a ton of opportunity for growth!

In terms of the information, it seems like the biggest news are all the new products and features that Google is releasing. This means that as far as SES is concerned, there’s nothing really new to learn. As a matter of fact, people were coming to me with SEO questions, and I was surprised that I actually know the answers to them, seeing that my background is in AdWords!

Oh, here’s something interesting. Internet Explorer 7 doesn’t allow access to Google, and you can’t sign up for MSN ads with Firefox browser. Yep. It gives you an error. The claws are coming out.

Overall, it’s been a fantastic show and an amazing experience. The weather is a bit more chilly than I had hoped and anticipated, but according to the locals, it’s supposed to be warm! Jeez. Toronto’s a cool town, but I sure miss that California sun!

Well, my next appointment has arrived. We’ll have to wrap this up now and I’ll see you when I get home.

Search Engine Strategies 2006

Posted by Simon Leung in Google, Travel, Updates on April 23rd, 2006 | No Comments

I am leaving tonight for Toronto to attend the Search Engine Strategies 2006 Conference and Expo. This tradeshow is being called the “Premier Event” for Search Engine Marketing and Optimization, and is scheduled for April 25th and 26th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (North Building).

While this event no doubt has tremendous value to my Internet Marketing business, I am actually proud to represent the AdWords Optimization Team once again at the Google booth. During these two intense tradeshow days, I will have back-to-back “maximization” sessions with our advertisers to discuss their account and advertising goals in detail. These sessions will last the entire day, but are limited to 30 minutes each (my time is valuable!), and we will talk about in-depth and advanced optimization strategies to help them achieve the results they desire in their Google AdWords advertising campaigns.

This is an event that most people are paying upwards of over $1000 to attend, and you can bet that one of the most valuable assets that everyone is jumping on is the chance to speak 1-on-1, face-to-face, with a live AdWords Optimization Specialist. The tremendous value of such coaching can be worth over $1000 an hour, and it is with great honor to not only represent Google as the expert, but also to be able to provide at no additional charge to SES attendees.

And of course, despite all the hard work I will be putting in as a booth staff member, I am not going to pass up the opportunity to take advantage of attending one of the biggest SES shows of the year for free! You can bet that I will be roaming around other Search Engine companies’ booths to grab resources, literature and freebies!

In addition to the Google booth, here are some of the other events that will be going on at SES Toronto, taken from the official website at

Event Overview:

  • Organized by world-renowned search authority Chris Sherman.
  • Delivers real-time actionable information you need to grow your business through search engine marketing.
  • Teaches the ins-and-outs of search engine marketing from top search experts and the search engines themselves.
  • Provides a unique setting to network with fellow marketers and search engine industry professionals and discuss the trends in search engine marketing.
  • Grants access to the world’s most comprehensive gathering of search engine marketing & optimization-related solutions providers and potential partners & affiliates
  • Get the latest event information at the SES Blog

Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo 2006 features presentations and panel discussions that cover all aspects of search engine-related promotion.

What You Will Learn:

  • how search engines list Web sites for free and through paid placements
  • how to get free “organic” traffic by building a site that pleases search engines and your visitors
  • how to efficiently purchase listings guaranteed to rank your company at the top of search engine results.
  • how to calculate the ROI of your search marketing efforts by tracking your visitors from the time they hit your site until they buy—and get tips on improving conversion if they don’t!
  • how to build links that generate traffic to your Web site, and how to avoid the penalties of “spamming” the search engines
  • what’s coming next in the constantly evolving world of Web search, and how you can profit from those changes

As you can see, a ton of amazing resources. I definitely hope that my 2 days of sessions don’t wear me out too much, because I still want to find the time to network and to have fun!

Fun? Yes, there’s also an SES Party on Tuesday night! SES parties are some of the best times you will have. And this one is going to be in Toronto! It’s not going to get any better than that…

Well, I better get packing. This is going to be one hell of a trip.

See you in Toronto! is Live!

Recently, I was finally able to register the domain name for my name, Simon Leung. The domain name,, was previously registered, but inactive (the domain redirected to an incomplete free Yahoo website). It finally expired not too long ago, and and since I was watching it like a hawk, I was able to pick it up the moment it became available again :)

After doing a little bit of research, I decided to switch over from Blogger and install WordPress on my domain to power my blog. It was an easy switch since my webhost supports Fantastico, which made it pretty easy to have WordPress installed into my website. However, I ran into some time-consuming tasks, such as finding a template, editing the templates and several other minor details which added up to 5 or 6 hours.

In addition, since I’m not too familiar with this program, I also had a hard time trying to figure out how to go about setting up an atom.xml file, since I was not able to locate it in the installation folder. I actually still don’t know how it works or if I need to generate one on my own. I’m also trying to figure out if I need to re-generate my entire Google Sitemap. I’m a little annoyed that WordPress did not come with better instructions or made things like this more apparent.

On the bright side, there was a handy Import feature that allowed me to copy over all my old blogs from my Blogger account to my new one. This is an awesome feature and probably saved me another few hours of work!

In any case, I’m going to play with WordPress some more. I’m also disappointed that the interface is not as user friendly as Blogger’s, and editing templates was a real hassle. But hopefully, the gurus know what they’re talking about and I’m able to capture some better rankings and results from the switch.

Oh, I also added a new ‘About Me‘ section. Check it out when you have time!
